Connection is what unites us all to our most basic but important human need, belonging. Connection doesn’t just walk by and only knows you by name. It is not just acknowledging something exists and takes up space, it means being accepted as you are and being a part of something greater. Learning how to connect is an investment to better every aspect of your life.

Building connections with others is acknowledging them for them. Seeing someone for them and being able to relate. I love to connect with people that have different experiences and from different walks of life. You learn about them, and even about yourself. Adding richness to life, helping me see that i too deserve to be seen. Connections can be made in minutes and leave an imprint on others. Feelings that come from being connected with others feed the soul. If life was just about going from point A to point B, waiting for “goals” before connecting and without interacting with our world around us then we would miss out on the point of being human. You will always be chasing to make up for lost times in your past, never allowing yourself to be free of those “what ifs”. You can do it alone, but you don’t have to.

Lets say you meet someone while in line at the store, and they say, “Hey, are you from Peru?”

Stop, right there.

How does it make you feel when someone sees you and acknowledges you for being you. You for a quality you possess. Not just, your in my way. Connection is being seen for you. You have so many qualities that make you different, hold space for it. Get to know others also. Why did he think Peru? Understanding people see and acknowledge the world through their perspectives and experiences will allow you to tear down walls and be open enough to connect. He must be Peruvian. And right there, you just created a new connection. Be open enough to share. I know I’ll go home and tell my mom that someone thought I was Peruvian. In these moments of connection we add meaning to our lives.

Connection isn’t belonging if it seeks to profit from it. Its from being seen and accepted for you. Belonging is a part of what you are and how you relate to others. We can relate to others by coming from completely different countries also. Belonging feeds the soul and fuels the heart

Connections are comfortable with people that look like us, come from the same backgrounds, have same lifestyles. Of course, saying “Hey, are you from my country Peru?” is also a reflection of my self. I am Peruvian. This is a clear example of how own experiences can be projected towards my ability to formulate and sustain connections.

Connection allows you to better learn about yourself too. Why do others say things, why do you think things. We sometimes might not truly know ourselves, and learning empowers yourself.

As the saying goes, “Knowledge is power, but knowledge of self is empowerment.”

Congratulations on taking the first step shape your life. Just reading this has proven that you are worth the investment of the time you give. To even dare to think there is more to life, now that is brave.
